Do You Need the Yellow Fever Vaccine for Your Trip?
Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection found in parts of Africa and South America. The vaccine is a live, weakened vaccine, and one dose gives long-lasting protection for most people. Whether you need it depends on where you are going, where you have been, and your own health.
Two different things matter here. A country can recommend the vaccine because there is a disease risk in some regions, or it can require proof of vaccination before you enter. Some countries do both, and some ask for proof only if you arrive from, or pass through, a country with yellow fever risk. The rules differ from country to country and can change, so check your destination's requirements before you book your flights.
Travelling to a country with yellow fever risk
Parts of tropical Africa and South America are listed as risk areas. If your itinerary includes one, the vaccine may be recommended even when no certificate is asked for at the border. A Medilife doctor can talk through your route and your health before you decide.
Entry rules that ask for proof
Some countries ask arriving travellers for a Yellow Card, the internationally recognised proof of yellow fever vaccination. Without it, you may be refused entry or asked to be vaccinated on arrival.
Transiting through a risk country
A layover can count. If your flight connects through a country with yellow fever risk, your onward destination may ask for proof. Include every stop when you check the rules.
Visiting Dubai, or too busy to travel to a clinic
Hotel guests, business travellers and busy residents can arrange vaccination where they are, which saves time before a trip.
Quick answer
When to Get Vaccinated Before You Travel
Plan to be vaccinated at least 10 days before you leave. The yellow fever certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination, so a shorter gap can leave you without valid proof at the border. If your departure is closer than that, check the destination's rules with its embassy or health authority as early as possible.
Yellow Fever Vaccination at Home, Hotel or Office in Dubai
Medilife's Vaccination at Home service is part of its home healthcare in Dubai, and the vaccination is given by Medilife's own team. A single injection is the standard course for most travellers aged 9 months and over, and the vaccine is a live vaccine, which is why a clinician checks your suitability first.

Your visit includes:
a review of your travel plans, medical history, allergies and medicines
a check of whether the vaccine is suitable for you or your family members
the vaccination itself, given by a healthcare professional
advice on what to expect afterwards
guidance on your yellow fever certificate
Medilife looks after the vaccine with proper storage and handling so that it reaches you ready to use. Because the team comes to you, there is no clinic journey, no waiting room, and no need to coordinate a whole family's schedules around a clinic's opening hours.
Medilife home healthcare covers Dubai, including Dubai Marina, Business Bay, Downtown Dubai and JBR.
At home
Residents and families can be vaccinated in the comfort of their own home. Parents can arrange for eligible family members to be seen in one visit.
At your hotel
Visitors can arrange the vaccination from where they are staying, which helps if you are in Dubai for a short stay before onward travel.
At your office
Request a yellow fever vaccination visitWorking travellers can fit the vaccination into the working day without leaving the workplace.
Your Yellow Fever Certificate (ICVP/Yellow Card)
The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), usually called the Yellow Card, is the document that proves you have had the vaccine. It records your name, the date of vaccination, the vaccine and its batch details, and the signature and stamp of the issuing healthcare professional or centre.
Under the International Health Regulations, a yellow fever certificate becomes valid 10 days after your first vaccination and stays valid for the rest of your life. You do not need to repeat the vaccine every 10 years to keep it valid. If you were vaccinated years ago and still have your original certificate, it is normally still accepted.
An ordinary vaccination record or clinic receipt is not the same thing. Border officials look for the certificate, completed correctly and issued by a vaccination centre that is authorised to issue it. When you contact Medilife, ask the team to confirm how your certificate will be completed at your visit, so you know exactly what you will hold when you travel.

Who Can and Cannot Have the Vaccine
A Medilife doctor decides whether the vaccine is right for you after assessing your health. These are the main points they consider.
Usually suitable after assessment
adults and children aged 9 months and over who have no reason to avoid the vaccine
travellers going to, or through, areas where yellow fever is a risk
Needs a clinician's advice, or may not be suitable
babies under 6 months: the vaccine is not given
babies aged 6 to 8 months: only in specific circumstances, on medical advice
adults aged 60 and over: assessed individually
pregnancy and breastfeeding: assessed individually
a weakened immune system, including organ transplant, immunosuppressive treatment or primary immune conditions
a thymus disorder, or a cancer diagnosis that affects the immune system
a severe allergy to eggs or to any component of the vaccine
Most people have no reaction, or only a mild one such as a low fever, headache or muscle aches for a day or two. Serious reactions are very rare. If you develop swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or collapse, call 998 straight away. For any other concern after your vaccination, a Medilife Doctor on Call visit can assess you at your location.
If You Cannot Be Vaccinated: Medical Waivers
If a doctor decides you should not have the vaccine, they can give you a signed medical waiver explaining why. Some countries accept a waiver for entry, but not all do, so check the destination's rules and ask your doctor before you travel.

An old certificate does not expire after 10 years, and it is normally still accepted. If you have lost yours, speak to the doctor or centre that vaccinated you, or to Medilife, about your options.
Rules differ for every country, and some recommend the vaccine while others require proof. Check the latest guidance from your destination's embassy or health authority, and tell the Medilife clinician your full route.
