Is Tdap the vaccine you need?
Tdap is a combination vaccine that helps protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, also called whooping cough. Its full name is tetanus, reduced diphtheria and acellular pertussis vaccine.
A request for a “tetanus shot” can refer to different vaccines. Checking the formulation matters, particularly if you need protection against whooping cough.
Tdap
- Protection
- Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis
- Main distinction
- Used for adolescent and adult vaccination, including pregnancy when indicated.
DTaP
- Protection
- Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis
- Main distinction
- A different formulation used in the routine vaccination of babies and young children.
Td
- Protection
- Tetanus and diphtheria
- Main distinction
- Does not include protection against pertussis.
| Vaccine | Protection | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Tdap | Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis | Used for adolescent and adult vaccination, including pregnancy when indicated. |
| DTaP | Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis | A different formulation used in the routine vaccination of babies and young children. |
| Td | Tetanus and diphtheria | Does not include protection against pertussis. |
These formulations have different uses and are not interchangeable for every patient. CDC
Boostrix and Adacel are Tdap brands. A product labelled Tdap-IPV also includes polio protection. Ask which product is available and whether it matches your age, vaccination history and reason for requesting a dose.
When you may need a Tdap dose
The right dose depends on your previous vaccinations and current needs. An old vaccination card, school record or pregnancy record can help your clinician decide what is due.
An adult booster
If you have never received Tdap or your tetanus and diphtheria protection needs updating, discuss your records with a clinician. Routine adult boosters are commonly given every 10 years using Td or Tdap. Pregnancy and wound care can change the timing. CDC
An adolescent vaccination
For a teenager’s booster or school request, check the exact vaccine and dose required. The appropriate timing depends on previous vaccinations, current local guidance and the product used. Share any school instructions instead of assuming every student needs the same dose.
Missing or incomplete records
If you cannot find your records, tell your clinician what you remember about earlier vaccinations. Catch-up care may involve a series of doses, rather than one booster. Bring any available documents, even if they were issued outside the UAE. CDC
Tdap during pregnancy
Tdap during pregnancy helps protect your baby against whooping cough by allowing protective antibodies to pass to the baby before birth.
The recommended window is usually 27–36 weeks in each pregnancy, preferably towards the beginning of that period. Discuss timing with your antenatal clinician, including any Tdap dose already given during this pregnancy. A dose received earlier in the same pregnancy is not routinely repeated in that window. CDC
When enquiring, share your pregnancy week and vaccination history so that the appropriate next step can be discussed.
Asking after an injury? A deep or dirty wound, puncture or animal bite needs prompt clinical assessment. Your vaccination history and the wound determine whether a booster or other treatment is needed. Seek urgent facility care for a serious injury or uncontrolled bleeding; do not wait for a vaccination enquiry. CDC

Tdap appointments, availability and cost
Contact Medilife for current Tdap availability and pricing. If a clinician has recommended a particular product, include its name in your request.
Before arranging an appointment, confirm:
- 01
The vaccine:
the available brand and whether it suits your age and clinical need.
- 02
The appointment:
the proposed date, delivery setting and any assessment needed beforehand.
- 03
The total fee:
whether the quoted amount includes the vaccine, consultation, home visit and any separate charges.
- 04
Insurance:
what your policy covers and what invoices or supporting documents you may need for a claim.
- 05
Your records:
what identification and previous vaccination information to provide.
Checking the total cost helps you compare the complete appointment, rather than the vaccine price alone. Ask your insurer about your benefits before relying on reimbursement.
Home vaccination and Dubai coverage
Medilife provides vaccination at home through its own team across Dubai. If you are requesting Tdap at home, share your address and preferred date, then ask whether the required dose can be arranged there.
Home care can reduce the need to travel to a clinic, particularly when mobility or family commitments make travel difficult. For a hotel or workplace request, ask about the supported setting when you enquire.

What to expect at your vaccination appointment
Start by contacting Medilife and sharing your request and location. Mention whether the dose is for a routine booster, pregnancy, incomplete records or another clinician’s recommendation.
For a vaccination appointment, have your previous records ready and discuss:
Any serious allergies or reactions to earlier vaccines.
Pregnancy and any Tdap dose already received during it.
Current illness, medicines and relevant medical conditions.
Any significant neurological problem following a previous vaccination.
The vaccination clinician checks suitability, explains the proposed vaccine and obtains your consent. Tdap is given as an injection into a muscle. Ask about the observation period afterwards and how to get advice if you have concerns.
A sore arm, redness, swelling, mild fever, headache or tiredness can occur. Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse after vaccination. CDC
Before leaving, ask for your vaccination record, including the product and date, and advice about any further doses. If you need documentation for school, work or travel, explain that requirement when arranging care.
Medilife’s medical team
Our home healthcare services are delivered by Medilife’s own team. When arranging vaccination, ask who will assess your suitability and who will administer the dose.

Questions about your Tdap appointment
Contact your antenatal clinician promptly to discuss your pregnancy week and previous doses. The next step needs individual advice; do not assume you should wait until after birth.
No. Vaccination after birth may protect the mother, but it does not transfer protective antibodies to the baby before birth. Discuss missed antenatal vaccination with your clinician. CDC
Close contacts should check that their pertussis vaccinations are up to date. Vaccinating people around a baby can help reduce exposure, but it does not replace maternal vaccination during pregnancy. CDC
Ask for the exact product name and its patient information leaflet. Ingredients can differ between brands and formulations. Tell the vaccination clinician about any known allergy so the relevant components can be checked before you consent.
Ask the school or employer which record format and details they require. Then discuss those requirements with the vaccination provider before the appointment, including whether they need a particular form, stamp or digital record.
You can contact a public vaccination centre to ask about the specific Tdap product, eligibility, charges and required documents. Specify Tdap when enquiring, since a tetanus and diphtheria vaccine alone does not include pertussis protection.
