Choose the Right (HCV) Hepatitis C Test
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral infection that targets the liver. Left undiagnosed, it can quietly cause inflammation and scarring over many years, which is why the World Health Organization lists early testing as one of the most effective ways to prevent long-term liver damage. Hepatitis C testing isn't one single test, though. Depending on your situation, you may need a screening test, a confirmatory test, or a test that helps guide treatment. Medilife offers all four, collected at your home, office or hotel.
HCV Antibody Test
This is the standard first step for anyone who wants to check their hepatitis C status, whether for routine screening or peace of mind after a possible exposure. It looks for antibodies your immune system produces in response to the hepatitis C virus. Starting from AED 299.
HCV RNA PCR (Qualitative)
If your antibody test comes back reactive, this test confirms whether the virus is actually present and active in your blood. It's the test that distinguishes a current infection from a past exposure your body may have already cleared.
HCV RNA PCR (Quantitative / Viral Load)
For patients with a confirmed hepatitis C infection, this test measures exactly how much virus is in the blood. It's used to monitor the infection over time and to check how well treatment is working.
HCV Genotype Test
Hepatitis C exists in several genetic strains. This test identifies which one you have, which helps your doctor choose the most effective antiviral treatment and estimate how long treatment may take.

Office.

Hotel.
Useful for visitors and business travellers in Dubai who need testing without disrupting their trip.
How Quickly You'll Get Results
Turnaround time depends on which test you take, since antibody screening and PCR testing use different laboratory methods. Contact Medilife for the current turnaround time for your specific test, and we'll let you know exactly when to expect your result.
Cost, Turnaround and What Your Result Means
HCV testing with Medilife starts from AED 299 for the antibody test. Pricing for RNA PCR and genotype testing depends on which test your situation calls for, so our team will confirm the exact cost when you book.
It helps to understand how the tests relate to each other. The antibody test tells you whether your immune system has ever encountered the hepatitis C virus. It doesn't, on its own, tell you whether the virus is still active in your body. That's what the RNA PCR test is for.
There's also a window period to be aware of. After an exposure, it can take several weeks for antibodies to reach detectable levels, and the exact timing depends on the individual. If you've had a recent possible exposure, mention this when you book so the Medilife team can advise you on the right time to test.
If Your Result Comes Back Reactive
A reactive or positive antibody result means your immune system has encountered the virus at some point. It doesn't automatically mean you have an active infection. Some people clear hepatitis C on their own. This is exactly why a reactive antibody result is normally followed by an RNA PCR test, which confirms whether the virus is still present. Medilife's clinical team will talk you through your result and arrange confirmatory testing where needed.
A private HCV test with Medilife is a medical diagnostic test. It's separate from official UAE residency or employment visa medical screening, which is carried out only at government-approved medical fitness centres.

Related Testing and Care
Hepatitis C rarely travels alone in a testing decision. Depending on why you're testing, one of these may also be relevant.
Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are different viruses, transmitted in similar ways. Many patients choose to test for both at the same time, especially after a shared exposure risk.
If your reason for testing relates to sexual health, Medilife's broader screening panels cover hepatitis C alongside other sexually transmitted infections in a single home visit.
Hepatitis C affects the liver. A liver function test measures how well your liver is working and is often taken alongside hepatitis C testing to build a fuller picture of your liver health.
HIV and hepatitis C share transmission routes, which is why the two are frequently tested together, particularly after a blood or needle exposure.
If you'd like to talk through your symptoms, your risk factors, or your result with a doctor in person, Medilife's Doctor on Call service brings a DHA-licensed doctor to your home, hotel or office.

Frequently Asked Questions
It means your immune system has been exposed to the hepatitis C virus at some point. It doesn't confirm an active infection on its own. Medilife recommends an RNA PCR test to confirm whether the virus is currently active, and our medical team will guide you through the next step.
Not always. Hepatitis C exists as several distinct genetic strains, known as genotypes, numbered 1 through 6. Genotype 1 is the most common strain seen globally and in the Gulf region, but the specific genotype you have can influence which antiviral medication your doctor recommends and how long treatment typically takes. This is what Medilife's HCV Genotype Test identifies. According to treatment guidance published by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, modern antiviral therapy is highly effective across all major genotypes when the correct one is identified first, which is why genotyping is usually only carried out after an active infection has already been confirmed by RNA PCR.
Antibodies take time to develop after exposure, so testing too early can miss a recent infection. If you've had a specific exposure, let the Medilife team know the date when you book so we can advise on the right time to test.
No. A private HCV test with Medilife is a medical diagnostic test for your own information. Official residency and employment medical screening is carried out only at government-approved medical fitness centres and isn't something a home test can replace.
No special preparation or fasting is needed for HCV testing. A member of the Medilife team will confirm any specific instructions when you book.
