Lymphatic Drainage Massage for Swollen, Heavy Legs in Pregnancy
Pregnancy lymphatic massage, also called prenatal lymphatic massage or manual lymphatic drainage, uses very light, slow, rhythmic strokes to encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid. It does not use deep pressure, and it is not a deep-tissue or relaxation massage.
Many women look for it when they notice:
Heavy, swollen legs and ankles, especially towards the end of the day
Puffy feet that make shoes feel tight
A wish to relax without the pressure of a firmer prenatal massage
The session focuses on the legs, ankles and feet. The physiotherapist may also work on the hands or neck where appropriate. It is meant to support comfort and a lighter feeling in the body. It does not treat the cause of swelling or any pregnancy complication.

Is Lymphatic Drainage Massage Safe During Pregnancy?
The touch is very light, but that does not make it right for every pregnancy. Whether it suits you depends on how far along you are and on your medical history, so there is no single start week that applies to everyone.
Speak to your doctor or obstetrician first if your pregnancy is high risk or you have had any complications.
It may not suit you if you have, or have had:
Pre-eclampsia or high blood pressure
Deep vein thrombosis or blood clots
An active infection or a fever
A heart or kidney condition that affects fluid balance
Bleeding during pregnancy
Do not book a massage if you notice any of these. Contact your doctor or go to hospital instead:
Sudden swelling of the face or hands, especially with a headache
A severe headache or changes in your vision
Vaginal bleeding or fluid leaking
Severe abdominal pain
Your baby moving less than usual
Home massage complements your antenatal care. It does not replace your check-ups with your obstetrician or midwife.
