Protection Against Shingles and Lasting Nerve Pain
Shingles, also called herpes zoster, develops when the varicella-zoster virus reactivates. This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles can cause a painful rash, and some people develop postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN, which is nerve pain that continues after the rash has healed. CDC
Shingrix is a non-live recombinant vaccine designed to help prevent shingles and its complications. dailymed.nlm.nih.gov
Protection against shingles:
In clinical trials, Shingrix was 97% effective in adults aged 50–69 and 91% effective in adults aged 70 and older with healthy immune systems.
Protection against lasting nerve pain:
It was 91% effective against PHN in adults aged 50 and older. Protection varies with age and immune health, and vaccination does not prevent every case. CDC
Who Should Consider Shingles Vaccination?
Adults Aged 50 and Older
Shingles vaccination is generally recommended for adults aged 50 and older. Your medical history, previous vaccinations and current health help determine whether it is appropriate for you. CDC
Adults With Conditions or Treatments That Weaken Immunity
Younger adults may also need shingles protection if a condition or treatment weakens their immune system. This can include certain cancer treatments, transplant medicines or other immunosuppressive therapies.
Eligibility and timing need individual clinical review, particularly if you are receiving specialist treatment. Your treating clinician can help identify a suitable time to vaccinate. Having a chronic condition does not, by itself, establish that you are immunocompromised. CDC
Before arranging vaccination, discuss any previous severe reaction to Shingrix or its ingredients, pregnancy, current illness and medicines with a clinician. Vaccination should be postponed during an active shingles episode or a moderate or severe acute illness. dailymed.nlm.nih.gov
If you currently have a painful rash or suspect shingles, seek prompt medical assessment. Shingrix prevents future disease; it does not treat an active episode. CDC
Shingrix Doses, Timing and Price
Shingrix requires two doses. The usual interval is 2–6 months between the first and second dose. A clinician may recommend a shorter interval of 1–2 months for selected people with weakened immune systems. CDC

What to Discuss Before Your Appointment
Call or WhatsApp Medilife and share:
Step 1: Whether you need your first or second Shingrix dose.
Step 2: Your preferred location and appointment time.
Step 3: The date of your first dose, if you have already received it.
Step 4: Any questions about suitability, consultation fees, insurance or documentation.
For the clinical discussion, have details of your medicines, allergies, previous vaccine reactions and relevant medical treatment available. If you receive treatment that affects immunity, discuss vaccination timing with your treating clinician. CDC
After Vaccination and Planning Your Next Dose
Common reactions include a sore arm, redness or swelling, tiredness, headache, muscle aches and fever. These usually settle within 2–3 days, but can temporarily affect normal activities. Allow some flexibility in your plans after vaccination. CDC
Contact a healthcare professional if symptoms worsen or do not improve. Serious reactions are uncommon. Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat. Guillain-Barré syndrome, a serious nerve condition, has been reported very rarely after Shingrix. CDC
Keep a record of your vaccination date and plan your second appointment. Common temporary reactions after the first dose do not usually prevent course completion; discuss a severe reaction with a clinician before another dose. CDC

Questions About Shingles Vaccination
The course usually does not need to be restarted. Arrange the second dose as soon as possible and share the date of your first vaccination with the clinician. CDC
Wait until the acute illness has resolved and symptoms have settled. The appropriate timing should be discussed with a clinician, especially if you have ongoing symptoms or treatment. CDC
Yes, previous Zostavax vaccination does not remove the need to consider Shingrix. Tell the clinician when you received it so the interval can be checked. CDC
Shingrix can be given alongside certain other vaccines at separate injection sites. Tell Medilife which vaccine you are considering so clinical suitability and appointment arrangements can be discussed. CDC
No. Shingrix is intended to prevent shingles and related complications. Chickenpox vaccination has a different purpose and schedule; Shingrix does not replace it. CDC
