Quick answer
What the stool antigen test checks
A stool antigen test looks for fragments of the Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacterium in a stool sample. H. pylori lives in the lining of the stomach. Many people carry it without symptoms, but in some it contributes to gastritis and to stomach or duodenal ulcers.
Antigens are shed only while the bacteria are present, so a positive result points to an infection that is active now. This is the main difference from an H. pylori antibody blood test, which can stay positive after an infection has cleared. The stool test can also show whether treatment has worked, which the antibody test cannot.
The test does not show whether H. pylori has caused an ulcer or other damage to the stomach. Your doctor decides whether further tests, such as endoscopy, are needed.
Who may need a stool antigen test
Doctors usually request this test because of symptoms, a history of ulcers or a follow-up after treatment. It may be relevant if you have any of the following.
Ongoing indigestion or upper abdominal discomfort
Burning or aching in the upper abdomen, bloating, nausea or frequent belching that keeps returning can be a reason for a doctor to test for H. pylori.
A current or previous stomach ulcer
If you have had an ulcer, finding out whether H. pylori is present helps your doctor plan treatment.
Follow-up after H. pylori treatment
The test can show whether the infection has cleared. Doctors usually leave several weeks after treatment before retesting, so follow their advice on timing.
Family history of stomach cancer
Your doctor may suggest testing when assessing your own risk.
Unexplained iron deficiency anaemia
If your doctor suspects the stomach as a possible source, an H. pylori test may be part of the investigation.
Difficulty getting to a clinic
Home collection suits older adults, people with limited mobility, hotel guests and anyone who cannot easily leave work or family responsibilities.
How your home stool test works
Contact Medilife
Call, WhatsApp or send an enquiry. Say that you would like a stool antigen test, share your location in Dubai and tell the team about any medicines you are taking.
Medilife arranges your visit
The team arranges collection at your home, hotel or office. Same-day access is available, so ask about the earliest time for your area.
Your sample is collected.
Medilife's team gives you the collection container and instructions and collects the sample from you at your location.
Laboratory testing and your result.
The sample goes for laboratory testing, and results are available within 24 hours. The team will tell you how you will receive your report when you book.
Cost of the test
The H. pylori stool antigen test costs AED 350. If you would like to check what is included, or ask about insurance or reimbursement documentation, contact the Medilife team before you book.
Preparing for your test
Fasting
You do not need to fast for a stool antigen test.
Medicines
Some medicines can suppress H. pylori and cause a falsely negative result. These include antibiotics, bismuth preparations and acid-reducing tablets called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as omeprazole. Doctors commonly ask patients to stop PPIs for about two weeks beforehand and to wait around four weeks after antibiotics or bismuth, but the right gap depends on your situation. Tell the Medilife team everything you take. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice
The sample
Keep the sample free of urine and toilet water. The team will explain how to collect it.
Home, hotel or office
At home
Your sample is collected in your own space, with no clinic waiting room and no journey across Dubai.
At your hotel
Visitors and business travellers can arrange collection at their accommodation, which is useful when digestive symptoms start during a trip.
At your office
If you cannot leave work, the team can arrange collection at your workplace.
Understanding your result
Your report will show whether H. pylori antigen was detected or not detected.
Detected
Detected suggests an active infection. If you were treated recently, it can also mean the infection is still present, or that the test was done too soon after treatment.
Not detected
Not detected means no antigen was found. It can still be falsely negative if you were taking acid-reducing medicines, antibiotics or bismuth before the test.
A positive result does not mean you have an ulcer. A doctor decides on treatment, including which antibiotics to use, and whether you need more tests.
If you need a doctor to assess your symptoms
Medilife's Doctor on Call service brings DHA-licensed doctors to your home, hotel or office 24/7. A doctor can assess your symptoms, review your medicines, discuss your result and advise on next steps. The typical response time is approximately 30 to 45 minutes across Dubai. Medilife doctors can assess many urgent but medically stable concerns at your location.
Some symptoms need emergency care rather than a home visit or a stool test. If you are vomiting blood, passing black or tarry stools, have severe or sudden abdominal pain, or feel faint, call an ambulance or go to the nearest emergency department. If you have difficulty swallowing or persistent abdominal pain, arrange a medical assessment promptly.
