When Maternity Massage May Help During Pregnancy
Maternity massage, also called pregnancy massage or prenatal massage, is a gentle form of massage designed for expectant mothers. The pressure, positioning and pace change to suit how far along you are and how your body feels. Many women book it for comfort and relaxation.
Back, hip and pelvic comfort
Carrying extra weight can leave your lower back, hips and pelvis aching. A gentle massage may help ease muscle tension and make you feel more comfortable. If the pain is sharp, constant or limits how you move, speak to your doctor or ask about a physiotherapy assessment.
Swollen legs and feet
Mild swelling is common in pregnancy, especially in the later months, and gentle massage may help your legs feel lighter. Sudden or severe swelling, swelling in your face or hands, or swelling with headaches needs medical attention rather than massage.
Sleep and stress
Pregnancy can make it hard to switch off. A calm, unhurried massage at home may help you relax and rest more easily. It is a comfort treatment, not a treatment for anxiety or low mood. If you feel persistently low or anxious, tell your doctor or midwife.
Difficulty getting out and about
Late in pregnancy, even a short journey can feel tiring, and Dubai traffic does not help. A home visit means the massage comes to you, in your own space and at your own pace.
How Your Maternity Massage Is Carried Out
Pregnancy changes how the body responds to massage, so every Medilife visit follows the same step-by-step process. It reflects the precautions described in published research on massage during pregnancy.
- 1
Health screening before your visit.
When you book, we ask how many weeks pregnant you are, your due date, and whether you have any complications. We also ask about high blood pressure, a history of blood clots, bleeding, or anything your doctor has asked you to watch.
- 2
Medical clearance where needed.
If anything on that list applies, we ask for your obstetrician's or midwife's agreement before the visit. We usually begin maternity massage from the second trimester. In the first trimester we only go ahead with your doctor's agreement.
- 3
Consultation and consent at your door.
Your therapist reviews your answers, asks how you feel today and explains what they will do. You choose whether to go ahead, and you can stop at any point.
- 4
Safe positioning.
You lie on your side, supported by pillows or cushions, or sit semi-reclined. We avoid lying flat on your back or face down, because lying flat on your back later in pregnancy can press on large blood vessels and leave you feeling faint.
- 5
Gentle pressure and technique.
Strokes are flowing and light to medium in pressure, not deep tissue.
- 6
Extra care around your legs and abdomen.
Pregnancy raises the risk of blood clots in the legs, so we avoid deep or strong pressure there. We keep the abdomen to very light contact or avoid it. If you have pain, warmth or swelling in one calf, the session stops and we advise you to seek medical advice.
- 7
Pregnancy-suitable oils.
We ask about skin sensitivities and allergies first, and choose oils that suit pregnancy.
- 8
Comfort checks throughout.
Your therapist checks your pressure and position regularly. If you feel dizzy, faint, breathless, crampy or in pain, or notice bleeding, the session stops and we advise you to get medical help.
- 9
After your session.
Take your time sitting up from lying on your side, drink some water and rest. If anything feels unusual afterwards, contact us or your doctor.
Sessions run for 60 or 90 minutes. A 60-minute session suits most first-time clients, and 90 minutes gives more time for each area at a slower pace.

Is Maternity Massage Safe? Timing and Medical Clearance
For many healthy pregnancies, gentle massage adapted for pregnancy is a common comfort treatment, and research on relaxation massage in healthy pregnancies reports benefits for how women feel. It is not right for everyone, and timing matters.
Many practitioners prefer to wait until after the first trimester, and some ask for a doctor's agreement first. Whatever your stage, check with your obstetrician or midwife before you book.
Speak to your doctor first if you have:
- a high-risk pregnancy
- high blood pressure or preeclampsia
- a placenta problem, such as placenta praevia
- a history of blood clots or a clotting disorder
- a risk of, or history of, preterm labour
- bleeding or unexplained pain
- any condition your doctor has asked you to monitor
Get medical help instead of booking a massage if you notice:
- sudden or severe swelling
- a severe headache or changes in your vision
- vaginal bleeding or leaking fluid
- regular contractions
- pain, warmth or swelling in one calf
- your baby moving less than usual
If you are unsure whether massage is right for you, tell us when you contact Medilife. Our Doctor on Call service can assess non-emergency concerns at home. In an emergency, call an ambulance or go to the nearest emergency department.
