Quick answer
What Is the Dengue NS1 Antigen Test?
The Dengue NS1 Antigen Test is a diagnostic test that looks for NS1 antigen associated with the dengue virus. Unlike dengue antibody tests, which detect the body's antibody response, an NS1 test looks for a viral antigen.
Because NS1 is associated with the virus itself, testing may be particularly relevant during the earlier stage of a suspected dengue illness. The result should still be interpreted alongside the timing of your illness, symptoms and wider clinical picture rather than treated as a complete clinical assessment on its own.
If you are unsure which dengue test is appropriate, you can also view Medilife's Dengue Test options.
When May NS1 Testing Be Used?
NS1 testing may be considered when dengue is suspected during earlier illness, including when symptoms have started relatively recently. There is no single universal testing-day rule that applies equally to every patient and every assay.
The usefulness of an NS1 result can be affected by factors such as when testing is performed, previous dengue infection, the performance characteristics of the assay and the patient's clinical situation. For that reason, choosing a dengue test purely by counting a fixed number of days can be misleading.
If your main question is which type of dengue test may fit your situation, Medilife's broader Dengue Test page explains the available testing pathways. For wider information about the condition and local context, see the Dengue in Dubai guide.

How the NS1 Test Differs From Dengue IgM and IgG
NS1, IgM and IgG are related dengue tests, but they do not detect the same thing. Test selection may depend on the timing of illness, previous infection history and clinical context.
Dengue NS1 Antigen Test
- What it detects
- Dengue NS1 viral antigen
- General role
- May be useful during earlier illness when viral antigen is detectable
Dengue IgM Test
- What it detects
- Dengue-specific IgM antibodies
- General role
- Antibody testing that may be considered as the immune response develops
Dengue IgG Test
- What it detects
- Dengue-specific IgG antibodies
- General role
- Provides a different antibody-testing perspective, often interpreted with previous exposure and clinical history in mind
| Test | What it detects | General role |
|---|---|---|
| Dengue NS1 Antigen Test | Dengue NS1 viral antigen | May be useful during earlier illness when viral antigen is detectable |
| Dengue IgM Test | Dengue-specific IgM antibodies | Antibody testing that may be considered as the immune response develops |
| Dengue IgG Test | Dengue-specific IgG antibodies | Provides a different antibody-testing perspective, often interpreted with previous exposure and clinical history in mind |
These tests should not be treated as interchangeable. If you are uncertain whether NS1, IgM or IgG is more appropriate, clinical assessment can help place the result in context.

Understanding a Positive or Negative NS1 Result
An NS1 report usually states whether the dengue NS1 antigen was detected or not detected.
Positive NS1
A positive NS1 result means that the assay detected NS1 antigen. This finding can support dengue assessment when interpreted alongside the patient's symptoms, illness timing and clinical evaluation.
Negative NS1
A negative NS1 result means the assay did not detect NS1 antigen in that test. It should not automatically be interpreted as proof that dengue is absent. Timing, infection history, assay performance and clinical context can all influence how a result should be understood.
A clinician may sometimes consider other investigations as part of the wider assessment. For example, a CBC can provide information about blood counts and platelets, but a CBC is not the same as an NS1 antigen test and does not by itself confirm dengue.
Can a Negative NS1 Result Rule Out Dengue?
No. A negative NS1 result does not absolutely rule out dengue.
NS1 may not be detectable in every person at every point in an illness. The meaning of a negative result depends on factors including when the test was taken, the individual's infection history, assay performance and the overall clinical picture. An NS1 result should therefore not replace clinical evaluation when symptoms or concerns continue.
If you remain unwell after a negative result, or if your symptoms are worsening, consider medical assessment rather than relying on the test result alone. Medilife's Doctor at Home / Doctor on Call service provides a separate pathway for clinical evaluation.
If you are severely unwell or believe you may need hospital-level care, seek urgent medical attention rather than waiting for home testing or a routine home visit.

Other Dengue Tests Available
If NS1 is not the only dengue test you are considering, Medilife also offers separate IgM and IgG antibody tests. These are different diagnostic tests rather than add-ons that are automatically included with an NS1 booking.
Dengue IgM Test
The Dengue IgM Test detects dengue-specific IgM antibodies. It represents a different testing approach from NS1 antigen detection and may be considered depending on the stage of illness and clinical context.
Dengue IgG Test
The Dengue IgG Test detects dengue-specific IgG antibodies. IgG results are interpreted in the context of previous exposure, illness history and other clinical information rather than being treated as equivalent to an NS1 result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Medilife's Dengue NS1 Antigen Test is available as a standalone test for AED 350. IgM and IgG are separate dengue tests and are not automatically included with an NS1 booking.
No. An NS1 test looks for dengue NS1 antigen. A CBC measures blood-cell counts and can provide supporting clinical information, including platelet counts, when relevant. A CBC does not replace an NS1 antigen test and does not by itself confirm dengue.
A negative NS1 result does not absolutely exclude dengue. If symptoms continue or your condition is worsening, clinical assessment may be appropriate so the result can be considered alongside your symptoms, illness timing and medical history.
Yes. Dengue testing and clinical assessment are separate care pathways. If you need a doctor to assess your symptoms or review the wider clinical picture, contact Medilife about its Doctor at Home / Doctor on Call service.
