Quick answer
Understanding What a "Full STD Panel" Includes
There is no single, universal definition of a "full" STD panel. Different laboratories and providers bundle different numbers of infections into their panels, and the right option for you depends on what you want covered, not on which panel has the highest number attached to its name.
Medilife offers four panel options, ranging from a focused urine-based screen to a comprehensive panel that combines blood and urine testing. Each is explained below, including exactly what it tests for and how the samples are collected.
Medilife's STD Panel Options
7 Pathogen Test
Sample: Urine only Method: PCR
This is Medilife's focused panel, testing for seven bacterial and parasitic infections without requiring a blood draw:
- Chlamydia trachomatis
- Neisseria gonorrhoea
- Trichomonas vaginalis
- Ureaplasma parvum
- Ureaplasma urealyticum
- Mycoplasma hominis
- Mycoplasma genitalium
This panel suits patients who want a straightforward urine-based screen for the most commonly tested bacterial and parasitic STIs, without needing a blood sample.
17 Pathogen Test
Sample: Urine only Method: PCR
This panel builds on the 7 Pathogen Test, adding further urogenital organisms tested from the same urine sample:
- Chlamydia trachomatis
- Neisseria gonorrhoea
- Trichomonas vaginalis
- Ureaplasma parvum
- Ureaplasma urealyticum
- Mycoplasma hominis
- Mycoplasma genitalium
- Herpes Simplex Virus I
- Herpes Simplex Virus II
- Treponema pallidum
- Haemophilus ducreyi
- Gardnerella vaginalis
- Candida albicans
- Candida tropicalis
- Candida parapsilosis
- Candida krusei
- Candida glabrata
Worth knowing: Gardnerella vaginalis and the Candida species included here are not sexually transmitted infections in the strict sense. Gardnerella is linked to bacterial vaginosis, and Candida is a yeast that can overgrow naturally in the body. Medilife includes them because they are common causes of genital and urinary symptoms that patients often want ruled out alongside classic STIs, not because they are transmitted the same way.
24 Pathogen Test
Sample: Blood and urine Method: Serology (blood) and PCR (urine)
Medilife's most comprehensive panel, combining a blood sample with the full urine PCR panel above:
Blood sample:
- HIV I & II antibodies
- HIV P24 antigen
- Syphilis
- Hepatitis B (HBsAg)
- Hepatitis C
Urine sample (PCR):
- Herpes Simplex Virus I
- Herpes Simplex Virus II
- Chlamydia trachomatis
- Neisseria gonorrhoea
- Trichomonas vaginalis
- Ureaplasma parvum
- Ureaplasma urealyticum
- Mycoplasma hominis
- Mycoplasma genitalium
- Haemophilus ducreyi
- Gardnerella vaginalis
- Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Candida parapsilosis, Candida krusei, Candida glabrata
- Treponema pallidum
- Urine analysis
- Urine culture
Two things are worth clarifying about this panel. First, syphilis is tested twice using two different methods: once from blood (the standard approach) and once from urine as Treponema pallidum PCR. These are the same infection detected two ways, not two separate conditions. Second, urine analysis and urine culture are general laboratory checks for infection markers and bacterial growth, not individual pathogens in their own right. Taken together, this panel gives broad coverage across blood-borne and urogenital infections, but it is best understood as a wide-ranging urogenital and blood-borne health screen rather than literally "24 separate STDs."
Comprehensive STD Blood Test
Sample: Blood only Method: Serology
For patients who want core viral and blood-borne screening without a urine PCR panel:
- HIV I & II antibodies
- HIV P24 antigen
- Syphilis
- Hepatitis B (HBsAg)

Quick answer
Is a Full STD Panel the Same as a Full Blood Panel?
No, and this is a common point of confusion. A routine full blood panel, the kind ordered for a general health check, looks at markers such as blood counts, cholesterol, liver function and kidney function. It is not designed to detect sexually transmitted infections and will not reliably pick most of them up.
An STD panel is a separate, purpose-built test. Infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and trichomoniasis are detected through urine or swab PCR testing, not blood work, while others such as HIV, syphilis and hepatitis do use a blood sample but require specific antibody, antigen or serology tests rather than a general blood panel. If you have had a routine blood test and it came back normal, this does not mean you have been screened for STIs. If sexual health screening is what you need, choose one of Medilife's STD panels above rather than relying on a general blood check.

Sample collection
Depending on the panel you choose, you will need to provide a urine sample, a blood sample, or both. Medilife's home healthcare professional will confirm exactly what is required for your chosen panel before your appointment.
Preparation
For urine-based tests, it is best not to urinate for at least one hour before your sample is collected, as this improves the accuracy of the PCR result. No fasting is required for any of Medilife's STD panels.
Timing after exposure
Different infections become detectable at different times after a possible exposure, known as the window period. Testing too soon after exposure can sometimes return a negative result even if an infection is present. If you have a specific exposure date in mind, mention it when you contact Medilife so the team can advise on appropriate timing, and whether a repeat test later may be worthwhile.

What Happens After Your Results
Receiving your STD panel results is not necessarily the end of the process. If any result comes back positive or reactive, or if you have ongoing symptoms regardless of what the panel shows, the next step is a clinical conversation rather than trying to interpret the report alone.
Medilife's Doctor on Call service can review your results with you and advise on appropriate next steps, including treatment where needed. This is also the right option if you are currently experiencing symptoms and are unsure whether a panel is the correct starting point at all, since a doctor can assess your specific situation before testing.
Prefer a Single Test Instead?
A full panel is not always necessary. If you have a specific concern, such as a partner's diagnosis or a particular symptom, an individual test may be more appropriate than a wider panel.
Medilife offers individual testing for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, herpes, HPV, mycoplasma, ureaplasma, trichomoniasis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Ask the Medilife team which single test or combination best matches your situation, or explore Medilife's individual STD testing services.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pricing depends on which panel you choose, since the 7, 17 and 24 Pathogen panels and the Comprehensive STD Blood Test all test for different numbers of infections using different methods. Call or WhatsApp Medilife on +971 52 345 2646 for current pricing.
Turnaround depends on the panel and the specific tests involved, since blood serology and urine PCR are processed differently. Medilife can confirm the expected turnaround for your chosen panel when you book.
It depends on what you want screened. The 7 Pathogen Test covers core bacterial and parasitic infections from urine only. The 17 Pathogen Test adds herpes, syphilis and several urogenital organisms. The 24 Pathogen Test is the most comprehensive, adding a blood sample for HIV, hepatitis B and C. The Comprehensive STD Blood Test is a blood-only option. Contact Medilife if you would like help choosing.
Yes. Medilife collects samples at homes, hotels and offices across Dubai.
Yes. Booking, sample collection and results are all handled privately, and your results are shared only with you.
If you currently have symptoms, it is worth speaking to a doctor first rather than self-selecting a panel, since symptoms can sometimes point to a specific infection or a condition that testing alone will not clarify. Medilife's Doctor on Call service can assess your situation and recommend the right next step.
No fasting is required. For urine-based tests, avoid urinating for at least one hour before your sample is collected.
