Acupuncture During Pregnancy in Dubai
Medilife provides acupuncture during pregnancy in Dubai, with treatment that starts with a conversation about your pregnancy, your health history and your OB/GYN or midwife's care. Medilife Healthcare Services LLC is licensed by the Dubai Health Authority as a Home Healthcare Center and has served patients in Dubai since 2016. Your sessions are with Batool Fatima, a DHA-licensed physiotherapist.
Acupuncture is a complementary, non-drug therapy, so many women ask about it when they want relief from pregnancy aches and discomfort without adding medication. Whether it suits you depends on your health and how far along you are, which is why we begin with a screening conversation.

Is Acupuncture Safe When You Are Pregnant?
For most healthy pregnancies, acupuncture is generally considered low risk when it is carried out by a qualified, licensed practitioner who knows you are pregnant. That answer depends on you: your stage of pregnancy, your medical history and any complications all matter. No therapist should treat you without asking about them first.
For that reason, we ask about your pregnancy before booking any treatment, and we encourage you to let your OB/GYN or midwife know you are considering acupuncture.
Who should speak to their doctor first
Speak to your OB/GYN or midwife before starting acupuncture if your pregnancy has been described as high risk, if you have had bleeding, or if you have a medical condition or take regular medication. If you are unsure whether this applies to you, ask us before you book. We would rather answer your questions first than treat you before you are ready.
Possible side effects and when to seek urgent care
Some people notice mild soreness, a small bruise where a needle was placed, or feel sleepy or light-headed after a session. These effects are usually short-lived.
Some symptoms in pregnancy are not side effects and need prompt medical attention, whether or not you have had acupuncture. Contact your OB/GYN, midwife or a doctor straight away if you have vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid leaking from the vagina, a noticeable drop in your baby's movements, a high temperature, or a severe headache with changes in your vision. If you feel very unwell, call emergency services.
Why some acupuncture points are avoided
You may read that certain acupuncture points should not be used in pregnancy. Practitioners are generally cautious about points traditionally thought to stimulate the uterus, and they choose points according to how far along you are. This is a clinical decision made during your session, so it is not something to try on yourself. Please do not use pressure points at home without guidance from a qualified professional.
Acupuncture in Each Trimester
Pregnancy changes quickly, and what is appropriate for you can change with it. Your practitioner will ask how many weeks pregnant you are at every visit.
- 01
First trimester
Early pregnancy is when many women have questions about safety, and also when morning sickness is most common. If you are in your first trimester, tell us before booking so we can talk through your situation. Severe or constant vomiting needs a doctor's assessment first.
- 02
Second trimester
Many women feel steadier in the middle of pregnancy, but back and pelvic aches often begin as the bump grows. This is a common time for women to look for gentle ways to ease discomfort.
- 03
Third trimester and late pregnancy
Ask about your stage of pregnancyIn the final months, comfort, sleep and preparing for birth are common concerns. Advice about acupuncture in late pregnancy varies, so we will discuss your stage, your health and your OB/GYN or midwife's advice together before deciding anything.
What Prenatal Acupuncture May Help With
Women ask about acupuncture for a range of common pregnancy symptoms. The research is stronger for some than for others, and results vary from person to person.
- 01
Nausea and morning sickness
Some women look to acupuncture for mild to moderate nausea. If you cannot keep food or fluids down, please see a doctor first, as severe vomiting needs medical assessment. Medilife's Doctor at Home service can visit you at home.
- 02
Low back and pelvic pain
Back and pelvic discomfort is one of the most common reasons women try acupuncture in pregnancy. Medilife's Physiotherapy at Home service is another option you can explore for aches and movement problems.
- 03
Sleep, anxiety and tiredness
Pregnancy can disturb sleep and bring worry and fatigue. Some women find acupuncture relaxing and use it as supportive care. If you feel persistently low or anxious, please speak to your doctor or midwife as well.
- 04
Preparing for birth
Late in pregnancy, some women ask about acupuncture as part of getting ready for labour. We can talk through what is realistic with you. It is not a way to guarantee how or when your baby will be born.
What the Research Shows, and Where It Is Limited
Researchers have studied acupuncture for several pregnancy symptoms, including nausea, back pain and pelvic pain. The picture is mixed. Some studies suggest benefit for certain symptoms, but many trials are small, and treatments differ from study to study, which makes results hard to compare. Evidence is stronger for some symptoms than for others, and acupuncture will not work for everyone. We think you should hear that honestly before deciding.
Breech babies and labour: what is and is not established
You may have seen claims that acupuncture or moxibustion, a warming therapy sometimes used at the foot, can turn a breech baby or bring on labour. The evidence is not strong enough to promise either outcome, and we do not make those promises. Decisions about a breech baby or about induction should always be made with your obstetric team.
Acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion and fertility acupuncture
These terms are often mixed up. Acupuncture uses fine needles. Acupressure uses pressure on the same points without needles. Moxibustion uses gentle heat from a burning herb. Fertility acupuncture is aimed at conception and fertility treatment, which is different from the care on this page. This page is about acupuncture once you are already pregnant.

What to look for in a prenatal acupuncturist
Whoever treats you, it is reasonable to ask these questions:
Are they licensed to practise in Dubai?
Do they ask how many weeks pregnant you are, and about your history, before treating you?
Will they adapt your treatment as your pregnancy progresses?
Are they comfortable with you involving your OB/GYN or midwife?
Can they explain the benefits and limits of acupuncture honestly?
