What Liver Function Test Includes
A liver function test, also known as an LFT or liver profile, looks at seven markers in your blood: AST, ALT, ALP, GGT, Total Protein, Albumin and Globulin. Together, these enzyme and protein measurements provide information about liver and bile-duct health, patterns of liver-cell injury and aspects of the liver's protein-producing function.
AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase)
- What it measures
- An enzyme found in liver cells, as well as in muscle and heart tissue
- Why it's included
- May indicate cellular injury and is interpreted with ALT and other markers because AST is also present in skeletal muscle, heart and other tissues.
- If the result is high
- May point to liver stress, but can also rise after intense exercise or muscle strain
- If the result is low
- A low AST value is generally less clinically informative than an elevated value and should be interpreted using the laboratory's reference range.”
ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase)
- What it measures
- An enzyme found mainly in liver cells
- Why it's included
- More liver-specific than AST and commonly used as a marker of hepatocellular injury.
- If the result is high
- May suggest liver cell irritation or damage
- If the result is low
- Not usually a concern
ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase)
- What it measures
- An enzyme linked to the bile ducts and liver, also present in bone
- Why it's included
- Can contribute to identifying a cholestatic or bile-duct pattern, but ALP is also produced in bone and other tissues.
- If the result is high
- When ALP is elevated, GGT can sometimes help determine whether the source is more likely hepatobiliary rather than bone.
- If the result is low
- Low values are interpreted according to the laboratory range and the patient's clinical context.
GGT (Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase)
- What it measures
- An enzyme sensitive to liver and bile duct stress
- Why it's included
- Can help provide context when ALP is elevated and may support a hepatobiliary rather than bone source.
- If the result is high
- Can rise with liver stress, bile duct issues, alcohol intake or certain medications
- If the result is low
- Not usually a concern
The combined level of all proteins in your blood, including those made by the liver
- What it measures
- The combined level of all proteins in your blood, including those made by the liver
- Why it's included
- Low or high total protein can occur for several reasons, so it needs to be interpreted together with Albumin, Globulin and the wider clinical picture.
- If the result is high
- May reflect dehydration or certain conditions
- If the result is low
- May suggest reduced liver protein production or other causes
Albumin
- What it measures
- A specific protein made by the liver
- Why it's included
- Provides information about hepatic protein synthesis, although albumin changes are not specific to liver disease.
- If the result is high
- Not typically a concern
- If the result is low
- May suggest reduced liver function over time, or other causes such as diet or kidney health
Globulin
- What it measures
- A group of proteins, some linked to immune function
- Why it's included
- Globulins are a group of proteins with several functions, including immune-related roles. Some are produced by the liver and others by the immune system. Abnormal levels can have many causes and should be interpreted alongside Albumin, Total Protein and the wider clinical context.
- If the result is high
- May reflect immune or inflammatory activity
- If the result is low
- Uncommon and non-specific

Liver Function Test panel measures AST, ALT, ALP, GGT, Total Protein, Albumin and Globulin. It does not include bilirubin, PT/INR or an albumin-to-globulin ratio as separate reported values.
Enzymes vs Function Markers
AST, ALT, ALP and GGT are enzyme markers. They signal that liver cells or bile ducts may be under stress, but they do not directly measure how well your liver is working. Total Protein, Albumin and Globulin sit closer to true liver function: Albumin in particular reflects the liver's ongoing production capacity, though it can also be affected by nutrition and kidney health.
Understanding Your Results
No single marker on a liver function test panel diagnoses a specific liver condition on its own. The seven results are read together, as a pattern, rather than in isolation. Individual markers can be influenced by factors outside liver disease. Depending on the marker, these can include medicines or supplements, recent alcohol intake, strenuous exercise, nutrition and other health conditions. The reference range on your Medilife report reflects the specific laboratory standards used for your test, since normal ranges can vary between labs and by age and sex. If any of your results fall outside the expected range, it is worth discussing them with a doctor rather than interpreting them alone.

Yes. Kidney Function Testing, CBC or a Lipid Profile can also be arranged during the same collection visit when required.
If you would like your results explained or discussed, Medilife's Doctor on Call service can arrange a home visit.
Choose a Liver Function Test when your main goal is to assess the specific liver-related markers included in this panel. If you want broader multi-system screening that also includes blood count, cholesterol, blood sugar, kidney, thyroid, vitamins or other markers, Medilife's General Health Blood Test packages may be more appropriate.
The AED 300 Medilife Liver Function Test includes AST, ALT, ALP, GGT, Total Protein, Albumin and Globulin. It does not currently list bilirubin or PT/INR as separate components of this package.
Liver enzymes such as ALT, AST, ALP and GGT form part of Medilife's liver profile, but they mainly provide information about patterns of liver or bile-duct injury rather than directly measuring all aspects of liver function. Protein markers such as Albumin provide different information about liver-related synthetic function.
