Physiotherapy for Back, Pelvic and Hip Pain in Pregnancy
As your pregnancy progresses, your posture, weight and joints change, and everyday movement can start to hurt. Pregnancy physiotherapy looks at how you move and gives you exercises and guidance to stay comfortable and active.
- 01
Lower back pain
An aching back from changes in posture and weight, especially after sitting, standing or walking for a while.
- 02
Pelvic girdle, pubic symphysis or sacroiliac pain
Pain at the front or back of the pelvis, which can make walking, turning in bed or climbing stairs uncomfortable.
- 03
Hip pain
Pain when lying on your side, sitting, walking or getting up.
- 04
Sciatica, rib and upper-back tightness
Pain running down the leg, or tightness around the ribs and upper back as your bump grows.
- 05
Care at home
If travelling with a bump is hard, or you are visiting Dubai and need care where you are staying, the physiotherapist comes to you.
A session can include:
An assessment of your posture and movement
An exercise programme for core stability, mobility and posture
Guidance on lifting, sitting, sleeping positions and daily tasks

Physiotherapy supports comfort and movement during pregnancy. It does not replace your antenatal care. If your legs feel swollen, lymphatic drainage massage is a lighter-touch option, described further down this page.
Is Physiotherapy Right for You at Your Stage of Pregnancy?
Treatment is adapted to how far along you are and to your health. There is no single start week that suits everyone, so check with your obstetrician, midwife or doctor if you are unsure.
Speak to your obstetrician or doctor first if your pregnancy is high risk or you have had complications.
Physiotherapy may not suit you if you have:
- Vaginal bleeding
- A suspected blood clot
- High blood pressure or suspected pre-eclampsia
- Fluid leaking
- Regular contractions
Do not book physiotherapy if you notice any of these. Contact your doctor or midwife, or go to hospital:
- Sudden swelling of the face or hands, especially with a severe headache
- Vaginal bleeding or fluid leaking
- Reduced baby movements
- One-sided calf pain, swelling or redness
- Chest pain or breathlessness
- Regular contractions
Tingling or numbness in your hands is worth mentioning to your doctor before you book.
The session covers posture, movement and exercise guidance. It does not include an internal pelvic floor examination, or treatment for bladder, bowel or sexual-pain concerns. Speak to your doctor about those, who can refer you to a pelvic health specialist.
